Don’t Expect Consensus Building In Parliament If You Attack Me Personally, Bagbin Alludes

The speaker of parliament, Hon. Alban Bagbin has reiterated that the majority should stop attacking him if they expect consensus building in parliament.

He said this in an interview with state broadcaster GBC when he was speaking on the recent brawl in parliament. This response came on the back of accusations and attacks levelled by some members of the New Patriotic Party and the deputy majority leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin.

Speaking on the issue, he said, consensus building will be difficult if the majority caucus continues to attack his personality.

‘’In fact, one of them said I should learn how to lead. It’s because of the level of leadership I am at, he (Afenyo Markin) doesn’t’ understand’’

‘’You come and personally attack me, then you come to the house and expect that we should have that spirit of consensus building; things don’t work that way’’ he said.

If we recall, the speaker vacated the house at the brink of elections on the controversial E-Levy bill and some members of the majority feel it was a deliberate attempt to ensure the deputy speaker does not get the chance to vote and thus reduce the numbers on their side. However, Alban Bagbin has responded to that and proven that his absence was necessitated by genuine circumstances and that he had no ill intentions.
